How Often Should My Child Have a Dental Cleaning?

Daily tooth brushing is essential for keeping teeth healthy, but don’t neglect the kid’s dental cleanings at our office. Children need to develop a healthy habit of visiting the dentist every 6 months.

During each checkup, the dentist will clean their teeth, determine how the teeth are doing, and evaluate whether or not treatments are needed.

What to Expect During a Cleaning

Your child’s visits will be done in under an hour, but the benefits will last long-term. To start every appointment, our dental staff will go over the child’s dental health history and take x-rays of their mouth. Then, the cleaning process will begin. A staff member will scrape off any plaque or buildup on your child’s teeth. From there, all sizes of their teeth will be cleaned with an ultrasonic tool.

The hygienist will also floss and polish the patient’s teeth during the appointment. When all the cleaning is complete, the dentist will double-check your child’s teeth to see if there’s any decay. They will closely examine the patient’s teeth and gums.

When Should the First Dental Cleaning Be?

Shortly after your kid’s first tooth emerges, you should schedule them a dentist appointment. Dentists suggest that parents bring their child in within 6 months of their first tooth appearing. Most children start having teeth appear at about 6 months old.

The first few appointments in a child’s life won’t include much dental cleaning, as long as the parents are keeping up on dental care. The dentist will examine the teeth for problems and developing issues. They’ll also follow up with parents to make sure they’re helping their children take care of their teeth.

The Importance of Regular Cleanings

Kids need to brush twice a day and floss daily, but going to the dentist protects their teeth even further. If parents neglect consistent visits for their kid’s dental cleaning, the child will be at a higher risk of cavities, infections, and other health concerns. It’s difficult for kids to give their teeth the best care without the help of a dentist.

A dental appointment lets the dentist identify concerns before they become severe. If necessary, a dentist can treat cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems that can’t be addressed at home. Keeping dental appointments consistent is the best way to set your child’s dental health up for future success
